Emmett Shear, New OpenAI CEO; Altman is Not Coming Back!

By Business Leaders ReviewNovember 20, 2023

In an unexpected turn of events, Emmett Shear, one of the co-founders of Twitch, has taken the reins as the new CEO of OpenAI! Simultaneously, Sam Altman, former CEO of OpenAI, and Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, are set to embark on a new chapter with Microsoft.

A Surprising Choice for OpenAI Leadership

The appointment of Emmett Shear as the new CEO of OpenAI has caught many by surprise. Known for his role in co-founding Twitch, a prominent streaming platform, Shear brings a unique background to the helm of OpenAI. His experience in the tech and gaming industry adds an interesting dynamic to the leadership of an organization focused on artificial intelligence.

As Shear steps into the role of CEO, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman are making a significant move to Microsoft. Their departure from OpenAI marks a shift in leadership dynamics within the organization. The decision to join Microsoft suggests a strategic alignment with the tech giant’s vision and goals.

According to multiple sources, Shear’s surprise appointment comes after OpenAI’s four-person board refused to step down and let Altman return. The news was first reported by The Information, which said that employees were told Sunday that removing Altman was the “only path” to achieving the company’s mission of “broadly beneficial” artificial general intelligence. Spokespeople for OpenAI didn’t respond to requests for comment.

OpenAI’s largest investor, Microsoft seems to have made the best of the situation. In a statement Sunday evening, CEO Satya Nadella said, “we remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap.” Meanwhile, Altman and former president Greg Brockman are joining Microsoft “with colleagues” to “lead a new advanced AI research team.” “We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” Nadella said.

OpenAI’s four-person board refused to step down

Altman’s sudden exit at OpenAI came after the board said he had not been “consistently candid in his communications.” As we reported Saturday, the board quickly began discussing his return under pressure from investors and the threat of a mass employee walkout.

Emmett Shear’s connection with Twitch adds a layer of intrigue to his appointment. Twitch, known for its live-streaming platform, has been a transformative force in the gaming and content creation. Shear’s experience in steering Twitch’s success may bring fresh perspectives to OpenAI, especially in exploring the intersection of AI and online platforms.

What Lies Ahead for OpenAI under Shear’s Leadership?

As Emmett Shear takes on the CEO role, the tech community is eager to see the direction in which he steers OpenAI. His background in leading a successful platform like Twitch suggests an understanding of user engagement and technological innovation. The challenges and opportunities that lie ahead will shape OpenAI’s trajectory in the AI landscape.
