DeepSeek Boosts China’s Chipmakers in AI Race Against U.S.

By Business Leaders ReviewFebruary 13, 2025

    Key Highlights

    • DeepSeek’s AI models could help Chinese chipmakers compete with U.S. giants.
    • Focus on ‘inference’ tasks boosts efficiency without relying on raw processing power.
    • Open-source access and low fees may drive wider AI adoption in China.

The rise of DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence (AI) models is offering Chinese chipmakers, including Huawei, an edge in competing against powerful U.S. processors. Huawei and other Chinese firms lag behind Nvidia in AI model training, but DeepSeek’s models focus on ‘inference’, producing outcomes, and boosting efficiency without relying solely on processing power.

    Empowering Domestic Competitors

DeepSeek’s approach could narrow the performance gap between Chinese-made AI processors and U.S. counterparts. Recently, Huawei, Hygon, Tencent-backed EnFlame, Tsingmicro, and Moore Threads announced plans to support DeepSeek models, though specific details remain scarce.

    Driving Adoption and Real-world Applications

The open-source nature and low fees of DeepSeek models are expected to accelerate AI adoption and real-world applications, particularly amid U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips. Industry experts believe that DeepSeek aligns with the capabilities of Chinese AI chipmakers, which are better suited for inference tasks than high-intensity training.

As more industries (from automakers to telecoms) plan to integrate DeepSeek models into their operations, this development highlights a strategic shift for China’s AI sector. With a growing focus on inference efficiency and local industry needs, Chinese firms are poised to strengthen their position in the evolving AI landscape.
