Boston Micro Fabrication Launches BMF Clear Resin for Micro-Scale Optical Applications

Boston Micro Fabrication Launches BMF Clear Resin for Micro-Scale Optical Applications

    Key Highlights

    • Boston Micro Fabrication has introduced BMF Clear, an optically transparent 3D printing resin.
    • The material offers over 90% light transmittance and micron-level precision.
    • It is designed for applications in microfluidics, photonics, and biomedical devices.

Boston Micro Fabrication has unveiled BMF Clear, a new photopolymer resin engineered for micro-precision 3D printing applications that require high optical clarity and accuracy.

The material delivers more than 90% light transmittance, enabling the production of complex micro-scale devices with internal structures that were previously difficult to achieve using traditional additive manufacturing techniques.

BMF said the new resin is aimed at supporting innovation in fields such as microfluidics, advanced optics, and biomedical engineering, where both transparency and precision are critical.

Enabling Scalable Production of Micro Devices

One of the key advantages of BMF Clear is its ability to support scalable manufacturing of intricate components. The material allows engineers to produce microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, integrated optical features, and photonic interfaces with greater consistency and reliability.

Applications include fiber alignment channels, micro-lenses printed directly onto fiber optic tips, and integrated waveguides for sensing and data communication. These capabilities help bridge the gap between early-stage prototyping and full-scale production.

By combining optical transparency with micron-level detail, the material supports the development of complex geometries that were previously challenging to manufacture at scale.

    High-Resolution Printing With Improved Efficiency

BMF Clear is designed for compatibility with Boston Micro Fabrication’s 10-micron and 25-micron systems, printing at layer heights between 10 and 50 microns. It can be used across the company’s range of platforms, including high-end systems and compact benchtop solutions.

The resin works with Projection Micro Stereolithography (PµSL) technology, enabling ultra-high-resolution printing with fine feature detail and smooth surface quality. This reduces light scattering and improves transmission through internal channels.

As a result, engineering teams can reduce time spent on post-processing and focus more on design development and iteration.

    Addressing Long-Standing Material Challenges

According to John Kawola, CEO of Boston Micro Fabrication, the lack of truly transparent materials has long limited micro-scale 3D printing.

Traditional methods such as PDMS soft lithography have been widely used but come with limitations in scalability, durability, and design flexibility. BMF Clear is designed to overcome these challenges by combining optical clarity with high-resolution printing performance.

The material enables the creation of internal channels and integrated optical features, supporting the development of next-generation microfluidic systems, sensors, and electronic components.

    Availability

Boston Micro Fabrication confirmed that BMF Clear is available immediately through its direct sales channels and European distribution network, with pricing available upon request.
