DBT Labs Acquires SDF Labs to Boost Data Transformation

By Business Leaders ReviewJanuary 23, 2025

    Key Highlights

    • DBT Labs acquires SDF Labs to integrate advanced SQL comprehension capabilities.
    • The acquisition will speed up data transformation, improve code validation, and enhance data quality.
    • SDF Labs’ technology will improve DBT Labs’ data governance and metadata management features.

DBT Labs, a leader in data transformation tools, has acquired SDF Labs, a Seattle-based startup specializing in SQL comprehension. This strategic move aims to enhance DBT Labs’ platform by enabling real-time SQL code validation during the data transformation process, improving speed and data quality.

Role of SDF Labs in Data Transformation

SDF Labs, founded by former Meta and Microsoft engineers, has raised $9 million in seed funding since its launch in 2022. The startup’s SQL comprehension technology, built using the Rust programming language, allows developers to validate SQL code as it is written. This eliminates the need to move data into a testing environment for validation, helping developers catch errors earlier and accelerate the transformation process.

According to DBT Labs CEO Tristan Handy, customer demand for faster and more efficient data transformation tools drove the acquisition. With SDF Labs’ technology, developers will gain more confidence in their work, speeding up the overall development and testing phases.

Impact on Data Governance and Metadata

In addition to improving transformation efficiency, the integration of SDF Labs will bolster DBT Labs’ data governance capabilities. The SQL comprehension technology will add a new layer of metadata to DBT Labs’ data lineage features, making tracking and managing data across pipelines easier.
