For millions of people around the world, pets are not simply companions; they are family. Yet for many years, the pet aftercare industry lacked the emotional sensitivity, transparency, and professionalism that grieving pet parents deserved. Recognizing this gap, Mike and Andrea Harris set out to create something profoundly different through Pet Passages, an organization built on dignity, compassion, and trust.

As Founder & CEO and Vice President, respectively, Mike and Andrea Harris have transformed a deeply personal mission into one of the most respected names in pet aftercare services. Their work is not only changing industry standards but also reshaping how society honors and remembers beloved companion animals.

A Personal Loss That Sparked a Greater Purpose

The journey behind Pet Passages began with a deeply emotional experience that changed Mike Harris’s life forever. Dissatisfied with the aftercare options available when faced with the loss of his beloved pet, he realized there was a significant absence of compassion and professionalism in the industry.

“The desire to provide a better service than what was available is what fueled my passion,” Mike explains. “In that process, I realized that I also had a passion for helping people start their own business, which ultimately revealed my purpose and mission: guiding pet parents through their pet’s passage.”

That realization became the foundation for Pet Passages, a company dedicated not only to providing respectful pet aftercare services but also to supporting families during some of the most emotionally vulnerable moments of their lives.

Challenging an Industry That Needed Change

For Mike and Andrea, creating Pet Passages was about more than building a business. It was about changing outdated standards and elevating dignity within an industry that had long lacked consistency and oversight.

“I felt that it was my responsibility to make a difference,” Mike shares. “My dogs meant everything to me. I knew I couldn’t be the only pet parent that felt that way.”

That emotional connection became the driving force behind a service model that mirrors the respect and transparency associated with human funeral services. Mike’s professional background as a funeral director gave him a unique perspective on how meaningful aftercare experiences could be designed for pet families as well.

“Not only am I an over-the-top pet parent, but I also have that funeral director background,” he says. “To attack this problem from those distinct perspectives was natural, almost obvious for me.”

Today, Pet Passages operates with a strict set of core values that guide every interaction: dignity, respect, compassion, transparency, and integrity.

    Building Trust Through Transparency

In emotionally sensitive industries, trust is everything. Pet Passages has built its reputation by ensuring families feel supported, informed, and respected throughout the entire process.

“Trust is earned, and it’s what makes us successful,” Mike emphasizes. “We place so much importance on and value the relationships we make both with the public directly and with our veterinary partners.”

One of the company’s most innovative contributions to the industry is its Secure Passages™  pet identification, chain of custody and tracking system, a first-of-its-kind technology platform designed to provide transparency and accountability throughout the pet aftercare journey.

“Our technology is the first of its kind,” Mike explains. “Everything we do at Pet Passages mirrors the human side of afterlife services. Transparency and the ability to know where your pet is at all times while in our care brings peace of mind.”

By allowing families to know exactly where their pet is throughout the process, the system helps create reassurance and confidence during an otherwise heartbreaking experience.

    Compassion Beyond Operations

While operational excellence is critical, Pet Passages understands that grief is deeply personal and cannot be treated as a routine transaction.

The organization provides grief support resources, dedicated Rainbow Bridge rooms for final goodbyes, and personalized experiences tailored to each family’s emotional needs. Staff members are trained in procedures but more importantly, vetted for empathy and emotional sensitivity.

“Some families may need a little extra time, whether it’s to share a story or to spend time in our Rainbow Bridge rooms,” Andrea explains. “Empathy and compassion are difficult to train for, so it’s important for us to be very selective with those we hire.”

That careful approach to hiring has allowed Pet Passages to build a team of deeply compassionate professionals who genuinely understand the human-animal bond because they are pet parents themselves.

Creating Consistency Across a Growing Franchise Network

As Pet Passages continues to expand through franchising, maintaining consistency in compassion and service quality remains a top priority.

“Our franchisees go through a strict vetting process,” Mike says. “It’s important to see that a person has a servant’s heart before even entertaining the idea of offering a franchise.”

Franchise owners receive comprehensive training, ongoing coaching, monthly meetings, and continuous operational support to ensure the company’s values remain consistent across every location.

“We all support each other,” Andrea adds. “Communication is key.”

This people-first culture has helped Pet Passages scale while preserving the emotional authenticity that defines the brand.

    Transforming Grief Into Healing

One of Pet Passages’ most meaningful initiatives is its memorialization program, including Pet Tales™ and personalized memorial products designed to help families celebrate and preserve the memories of their beloved pets.

“Just like on the human side, we want to remember those we love,” Mike explains. “Healing comes with time, and remembering the good times helps that.”

These services acknowledge that grief does not end when a pet passes away. Instead, remembrance becomes an important part of the healing process, allowing families to honor the joy, companionship, and unconditional love their pets brought into their lives.

A Story That Reinforced Their Mission

Among the many families Pet Passages has supported, one story remains especially meaningful for Mike and Andrea.

A military serviceman traveled from North Carolina specifically to use Pet Passages’ services after losing his dog, who had also served as a military working dog. He was on active duty in North Carolina and his dog was with family in New York while he was away. The serviceman came home to take care of his dog and requested a military farewell ceremony for his loyal companion. Pet Passages was the only service that could provide what he needed.

“We made that happen,” Mike recalls.

The dog was wrapped in an American flag while the serviceman spent time saying goodbye in the Rainbow Bridge room. When the time came, he personally placed his dog into the cremation chamber, pressed the start button, and remained beside his companion throughout the entire process.

“He never left his precious dog’s side,” Mike shares emotionally. “For us, it was a lesson in what it truly means to be a service member.”

The experience reaffirmed why Pet Passages exists, not simply to provide a service, but to offer closure, dignity, and emotional support during life’s hardest moments.

Leading the Future of Pet Aftercare

As awareness surrounding pet aftercare continues to grow, Mike and Andrea believe the industry is entering a period of significant transformation.

“As a human funeral director, there are standards both in place and expected for humans,” Mike says. “Our pets are family members as well and deserve the same dignity and respect.”

Pet Passages aims to continue leading that transformation by setting higher standards for transparency, professionalism, and compassion across the industry.

“We are the leaders, innovators, and educators in this profession,” Mike explains. “Our hope is that as Pet Passages grows, other cremation providers will naturally evolve to emulate what we do.”

    A Vision Rooted in Compassion

Looking toward the future, Mike and Andrea Harris remain focused on expanding access to the Pet Passages experience so that more families can receive the compassionate support they deserve.

“Our vision is to provide every pet parent with access to the Pet Passages experience and service they rightfully deserve,” they share.

At its heart, Pet Passages is about preserving memories, honoring love, and ensuring that no family feels alone in their grief.

In an industry that once lacked emotional care and accountability, Mike and Andrea Harris have created something extraordinary: a model built not just on service, but on humanity itself.
