NORMA Switches To Koehler Paper for Eco-Friendly Private Label Packaging

By Business Leaders ReviewOctober 28, 2025
NORMA Switches To Koehler Paper for Eco-Friendly Private Label Packaging

    Key Highlights

    • NORMA switches to Koehler NexPlus Advanced, a recyclable paper, for select private label convenience products.
    • The new plastic-free grocery packaging offers heat-sealability and grease resistance while maintaining product safety.
    • The initiative supports NORMA’s long-term sustainability and circular economy goals.

European discount retailer NORMA has announced a major step toward sustainability by transitioning select private label convenience food packaging to Koehler Paper’s NexPlus Advanced. It is a fully recyclable and functional paper material.

The switch marks a significant milestone in NORMA’s mission to reduce plastic waste and implement sustainable packaging across its operations in Germany, France, the Czech Republic, and Austria.

    Redefining Private Label Packaging

The shift affects key convenience products such as cream of wheat and rice pudding, where maintaining food protection and freshness is essential.

By adopting NexPlus Advanced, NORMA demonstrates that sustainability and product quality can go hand in hand.

“We’re analyzing every aspect of our private label packaging to determine what’s essential and what can be improved,” said Katja Heck, Head of Central Advertising and Communications at NORMA. “Our goal is to conserve resources across the entire value chain – from production to point of sale.”

This decision reflects NORMA’s broader corporate responsibility strategy that is focused on minimizing environmental impact while ensuring the same level of consumer satisfaction.

Sustainable Innovation with Koehler NexPlus Advanced

Developed by Koehler Paper and manufactured by Frießinger Mühle, NexPlus Advanced combines functionality with sustainability.

The paper offers heat-sealability, grease resistance, and barriers against oxygen and oil, making it suitable for various food products traditionally packaged in plastic.

Its recyclability has been certified under the Cepi standard, confirming the material as a credible alternative to conventional plastic-based packaging.

With renewable raw materials and high recycling compatibility, Koehler NexPlus Advanced paper aligns with the growing push for plastic-free grocery packaging across Europe.

“High recycling rates, certified supply chains, and renewable raw materials make paper the ideal choice for recyclable packaging,” noted Christoph Wachter, Director of Flexible Packaging Paper at Koehler Paper.

Supporting a Circular Future in the Food & Beverage Industry

NORMA’s adoption of this sustainable solution is part of a wider transformation within the Food & Beverage Industry, where retailers and manufacturers are seeking greener packaging options to meet both regulatory and consumer expectations.

By integrating recyclable paper materials into its packaging strategy, NORMA reinforces its commitment to closed-loop recycling systems, where every stage of the product lifecycle contributes to environmental preservation.

This switch stands as an example of how collaboration between retailers and suppliers can accelerate the transition toward a circular economy. Together, they are proving that the future of convenience packaging can be both functional and sustainable, without compromising on performance or quality.
