    A cargo ship with a difference is set to dock at the Polish port of Gdynia early next week. The Pyxis Ocean, a bulk carrier that is 229 meters long and 32 meters wide, looks like any other dry cargo vessel — but with a big difference: it is fitted with two large, rigid sails known as WindWings.

    These 37.5-meter-tall wings use wind power to help propel the vessel and reduce the amount of fuel it uses to cut carbon — shipping accounts for nearly 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

    How the Wind-Powered Cargo Ships ‘Wings’ Work?

    The sail-like ‘wings’ on these cargo ships function based on the principles of aerodynamics. When the wind flows across these structures, it generates lift, which propels the ship forward. These wings can be adjusted to optimize their angle and position, ensuring they capture the most wind energy possible.

    The incorporation of wind assistance technologies can lead to a significant reduction in fuel consumption. When the wind is favorable, these systems can provide supplementary power to the ship’s engines, effectively reducing the load on the main propulsion system and saving fuel.

    A Hybrid Approach

    Wind-assisted cargo ships typically employ a hybrid approach that combines conventional engines with wind propulsion systems. This setup ensures that the vessels have reliable and consistent propulsion while benefiting from the energy-saving capabilities of wind assistance when conditions permit.

    One of the advantages of wind-powered cargo ships is their operational flexibility. Crew members can adjust the ‘wings’ based on real-time weather conditions to optimize fuel savings. This adaptability ensures that cargo ships can maintain their schedules and efficiency.
