Snowflake Launched “End Data Disparity” Initiative

By Business Leaders ReviewDecember 3, 2024

    Key Highlights

    • Snowflake launched the “End Data Disparity” initiative to address global data access gaps that hinder Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
    • The program unites tech firms, academics, and international organizations to improve data collection, sharing, and utilization.
    • The initiative will include hackathons, pro bono consultancy, and policy advocacy to empower organizations in underserved regions.

Data inequality hinders global development, with emerging markets struggling due to limited tools and expertise. As artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing revolutionize industries, the gap between data-rich and data-poor regions is widening, jeopardizing progress on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to recent data, only 17% of measurable SDG targets are on track for completion by 2030, underscoring the need for systemic improvements in how data is gathered and used globally.

    Snowflake’s End Data Disparity Initiative

Snowflake, a leading provider of cloud-based data platforms, has launched the “End Data Disparity” initiative. This global program aims to enhance data accessibility and quality by fostering collaboration between experts from technology, academia, and international organizations.

The initiative, led by Snowflake’s Co-Founder Benoit Dageville, will organize hackathons, provide pro bono consultancy to nonprofits and NGOs, and advocate for policy changes to improve data standards. “Now is the time to use the power of data to accelerate progress in addressing social, health, and climate issues,” said Dageville.

    Global Collaboration for Sustainable Goals

The initiative specifically targets SDG 17, which emphasizes partnerships to achieve sustainable development. A panel of 11 experts from the technology and development sectors will lead the effort. The first-panel meeting is scheduled before the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2025.

Snowflake aims to make data technologies accessible to everyone. Its goal is to ensure no region or organization is excluded from building a fair and sustainable future.
